In this wide-ranging interview with Dr. Joop Loomans, we talk about his research examining veterinary practice characteristics, the importance of mentorship in 2023, and his time leading a veterinary clinic and training program in China.

This episode kicks off with a discussion surrounding the current state of the equine veterinary profession, which is growingly acknowledged to face challenges surrounding burnout, financial pressures, and career satisfaction. Joop discusses some of the findings from his research on the topic, including the need for enhanced communication and mentorship, and highlights opportunities for the growth of the profession in 2024 and beyond.

About the Expert

Dr. Joop Loomans began his veterinary career as an associate and later partner in an eight-vet mixed practice in the east of the Netherlands. In 2001 Joop joined the Department of Equine Sciences at Utrecht University to lead and grow the Equine Clinic and to perform scientific research resulting in a PhD. With Drs. Bob Magnus and Mike Pownall, he founded Oculus Insights, a global veterinary business education company that has grown also into coaching, consulting, and full management of veterinarians and veterinary practices. In 2010 Joop was asked by the management of the Department of Equine Sciences, Utrecht University to perform a fact-finding mission in China. This resulted in a long-term relationship where Joop was the designer and Chief Veterinarian of the first western equine clinic in mainland China and team veterinarian for the Jiangsu province eventing, show-jumping, and dressage teams. Joop is also the Executive Director of our IgnitE group!
