Outside Perspectives with Julie-Anne Staehli | Episode 42

By Tim Worden & Nicole Lakin of the IGNITE

In this episode, we chat with Canadian Olympian and World Athletics Championships competitor Julie-Anne Staehli. She shares her perspectives on a variety of topics related to being an elite athlete, including managing professional relationships, how to prepare for a major championship, and how she builds recovery into her training program. Julie-Anne has a unique perspective, and this episode will be of great interest to athletes and their support teams - especially those stepping up to higher levels of competition!

The purpose of this discussion is to expose the equestrian community to another perspective on sport and how to prioritize different components (whether they be training-related, psychological, resources, etc) to ensure success. Julie-Anne begins the conversation with an overview of her thoughts on preparing for major championships and staying focused on the task at hand. Her motto is happy, healthy, and running fast – and it is interesting to hear how she prioritizes these aspects of her life.

From there, we chat about the multi-disciplinary team approach to sports, the importance of being selective with professional relationships (e.g. sponsors and partners), and what to look for, as well as different recovery tools. We recorded the episode in September, and at that point in the year Julie-Anne was doing between 120 – 130 km of running each week – so how she designs the week to ensure she balances running with recovery was insightful.

Julie-Anne is also the co-founder of the ReRUN Shoe Project, which collects lightly used running shoes and donates them to local organizations. Visit the link below for more information about the ReRUN project and Julie-Anne!
